The Power of Faith in the Wilderness
As we begin our Lenten journey, today’s readings invite us to reflect on faith, trust, and perseverance in the face of trials.
1. The Offering of First Fruits – Gratitude in Deuteronomy (Deut 26:4-10)
In the first reading, Moses instructs the Israelites to bring the first fruits of their harvest to the Lord, remembering how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt. This is an act of gratitude, acknowledging that all blessings come from God. Lent is a time to examine our own hearts: Do we recognize God’s hand in our lives? Do we offer Him the “first fruits” of our time, talents, and love, or just what is left over?
2. Faith and Salvation in Romans (Rom 10:8-13)
St. Paul reminds us that salvation is close—it is in our hearts and on our lips when we confess that Jesus is Lord. Faith is not just intellectual belief but a deep trust in Christ. In Lent, we are called to renew this faith, letting Christ transform us from within.
3. Jesus in the Wilderness – Triumph Over Temptation (Luke 4:1-13)
The Gospel presents Jesus being tempted by the devil in the wilderness. Satan tempts Him with comfort (bread), power (kingdoms), and pride (testing God)—the same struggles we face today. Jesus resists by relying on God’s Word, showing us that Scripture and prayer are our weapons against temptation.
Conclusion: A Lenten Call to Trust
Lent is a time of spiritual battle, but also of grace. Like the Israelites, we remember God’s past faithfulness. Like Paul, we proclaim our faith in Christ. Like Jesus, we stand firm against temptation. Let us journey through Lent with gratitude, faith, and trust, knowing that God is always with us.
“Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Luke 4:4). May we truly live by this Word in the weeks ahead, Amen.

Holy Adoration & Benediction On all Friday’s during Lent, please join us at St. John’s Church for extended Holy Eucharistic Adoration, Divine Mercy prayers & Benediction from 9:30am until 3pm. We still have unclaimed hours, please sign up for your hour on one of the sign-up sheets at the side entrance or in the Narthex, or by calling the Parish office.
Lent is the yearly celebration by the Church of its corporate conversion in Jesus Christ. During Lent, the Liturgy prepares the Catechumens to celebrate the Paschal Mystery by the various stages of Christian Initiation. It also prepares the faithful for Easter as they recall their baptism and enter into penance in preparation for the greatest Feast of the year.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast & Abstinence. All Catholics ages 18-59 are to observe fasting and those 14 and older are to abstain from meat on those days.
Penitential Discipline: Penance is an important requirement of the Christian life. Fulfillment of this duty involves prayer, works of piety and charity, self denial and fulfilling our obligations more faithfully. Every Friday of the year, especially during Lent, is a penitential day.

First Communion & Reconciliation Candidates: The next class will be this Sunday, March 9th, beginning with 11am mass, followed by class in the Narthex.
Confessions are available 30 minutes before each regular Daily & Weekend Mass.

First Communion & Reconciliation Candidates:
Classes to be held on the 2nd Sunday of each month. The next class will be Sunday, March 9th and will begin with the 11am mass, followed by class in the Narthex.
Confirmation Candidates:

Our Life Matters Core Group will offer the 9am Mass on third Wednesday of the month for the Protection of All Human Life. Mass to be followed by a Rosary in Reverence for Life. Everyone is welcome!
St. John's Holy Face Group:
St. John's Holy Face Group (meets on the last Thursday of the month) following the noon Mass. Our monthly gatherings will last no longer than one hour and will provide an opportunity to pray, share and learn about this powerful, Church-approved Holy Face devotion of reparation. Spiritual Reflections with Archbishop Mulhall
Wednesdays; 7:00 pm
We will be reflecting on the Beatitudes of St. Matthew’s Gospel Chapter 5 as well as a series of Psalms of the Old Testament which we pray each day at Mass. As usual, we will also give time to the liturgical celebrations of Lent/Easter as we pass through the year.
It is good to remember that there is no starting point or end point as in a series of lectures or an academic course. Though we refer to previous reflections, we repeat our thoughts frequently so that anyone can join at any stage or miss weeks without losing any necessary points or developments. I like to think of our reflections as one long continuous series of reflections on a mystery from countless starting points. All these reflections I pray will be beneficial for us at whatever time of life or stage of our spiritual pilgrimage. The Lord, in whose presence we will pray together will always provide the grace, consolation, and strength that we need to make steady progress in our life of faith.
7th Annual Rideau Canal Men’s Retreat by canoe and kayak
Tuesday, August 5- Thursday, August 7
Theme: Jubilee 2025 - Pilgrims of Hope
Planning is underway for the 7th Annual Rideau Canal Men's Retreat 2025 for Catholic men (18 years and older, and fathers with teenage sons) will be from August 5-7, 2025.
As in previous years, the goal is to gather Catholic men in an outdoor adventure/retreat where we can share our faith and enjoy a little male camaraderie. We hope that all who are interested in participating in this enjoyable event can work their schedules and join us for this time of prayer, daily Mass, opportunities for Confession, and lots of fun, fraternity, exercise, and adventure. If you know other men who may be interested and are not on our distribution list, please feel free to forward an invitation to them. We anticipate being fully registered, so this is your chance to let us know if you are interested. Thank you for your consideration.

Steubenville 2025 Youth Conference: Registration Open

After a very successful trip to Steubenville in June 2024, St. Michael’s Parish in Belleville is organizing another trip this year for teenagers to attend their youth conference, and opening this opportunity for youth across the archdiocese.
