WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S FLOCKNOTE
This 15th Sunday readings converge on a powerful truth: God’s Word is not distant; it is lived through mercy.
In the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses declares that the command to love is not “beyond the sea” or “up in heaven,” but already planted in our hearts. We don't need to go on a spiritual quest to know what God wants. God’s command is simple: love deeply, love tangibly, and love sacrificially.
A man is beaten and left for dead. Two religious men, a priest and a Levite, see him and walk away. But a Samaritan, an outsider in every sense, is moved with compassion. He doesn't just feel pity, he acts. He bandages, carries, and pays. He saves.
This story told by Jesus reminds us that, love of neighbour is not about groups or proximity but about compassion in action. Being religious is not enough if we fail to respond to the suffering around us. The Samaritan had every excuse not to stop, but his heart was moved. His love crossed barriers.
This Gospel confronts us. It's not about what we know, it’s about what we do with what we know. The command to love is not hard to find. It is in our hearts. It’s in the stranger who needs kindness. It's in the voice of the suffering calling from the roadside.
And in Colossians, St. Paul reveals the One who makes such love possible: Jesus Christ, the image of the invisible God. Through Him, with Him and in Him, all things hold together including you, me, and the stranger in need.
So, what does eternal life look like? It looks like crossing the road to bind the wounds of a stranger. It looks like mercy made visible. May we ask ourselves: Who is lying by the roadside of my life? And am I willing to stop?
To love like the Samaritan is to live like Christ. And to live like Christ is to make heaven visible on earth.
Let us not simply admire the Good Samaritan, let us be one. For Jesus ends with this charge: “Go and do likewise.”
So today, the question isn’t “Who is my neighbor?” The real question is: Will I be one?
