“A Heart That Turns Back to Say Thank You”
At a Thanksgiving dinner, Grandma asked everyone to name one thing they were thankful for. There was silence, until little Lucy said, “I am thankful that Uncle Bob didn’t burn the turkey this year!” Everyone laughed, but Lucy had done what Jesus longs for us to do, “notice a blessing and say thank you”.
In today’s Gospel (Luke 17:11–19), ten lepers cry out for mercy, and Jesus heals them all. Yet only one of them, a Samaritan, comes back to thank Him. Jesus asks, “Were not ten made clean? Where are the other nine?” Gratitude matters to God, not because He needs our thanks, but because it keeps our hearts open to grace.
On this Thanksgiving weekend, we are invited to be that one who returns, to pause, to notice, and to say, “Thank You, Lord.” We give thanks for family, for food, for the harvest, but also for the quiet blessings: the strength that carried us, the faith that sustained us, the peace that surprised us in hard times.
Gratitude transforms ordinary moments into prayer. It reminds us that everything we have, our health, our home, even our next breath is a gift.
So, before we reach for another slice of pie, let’s turn our hearts to Jesus and whisper the simplest, sweetest prayer we can ever say:
“Thank You, Lord, For Everything.”

What is a Jubilee or Holy Year:
Jubilee Celebration!
Thank you to everyone who expressed enthusiasm for our upcoming Jubilee Celebration announced last week. The Parish of St. John the Baptist, together with our entire Deanery, invites you to this special celebration, now rescheduled to Sunday, October 19th at 3:00pm.
We are still planning to gather at St. John’s Cemetery for this occasion. As the weather will be cooler in mid-October, please dress appropriately and bring a lawn chair. If conditions are too chilly, the celebration will be moved into the church (a decision we will make closer to the day).
Highlights of the afternoon include the recitation of the Holy Rosary and Benediction, and all who participate will receive a Jubilee Indulgence. This promises to be a beautiful time of prayer and thanksgiving for our parish and deanery.
REMINDER: Please do not wear any Fragrance to church, we have parishioners who are highly allergic.

In doing so, preference will be given to a local buyer who will respect the heritage of the property and repurpose it in harmony with the Portsmouth community and, more broadly, with Kingston’s historical character. St. John's Holy Face Group (meets on the last Thursday of the month) following the noon Mass. Our monthly gatherings will last no longer than one hour and will provide an opportunity to pray, share and learn about this powerful, Church-approved Holy Face devotion of reparation. Pilgrimage to the Canadian Martyrs' Shrine, Midland (by St. Mary’s Carleton Place) July 16 -17, 2026 Pilgrims will leave St. Mary in Carleton Place and travel by coach to Midland. There, pilgrims will participate in Holy Mass. The Stations of the Cross and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available, as well as many other opportunities for private prayer.
