Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Today we celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Pope, the “Mother and head of all churches in the world.” It’s a day to remind us that our faith is not just about buildings of stone, but about the living temple of God built in human hearts.
In the first reading, Ezekiel has a strange but beautiful vision: water flowing from the Temple, bringing life wherever it goes. Trees bloom, fish multiply, deserts blossom. That river is the grace of God’s life flowing from His presence into the world. Whenever we gather in God’s house, to drink from His Word, and receive His Sacraments, we are dipped into that river of life. Then we go out, carrying it to a thirsty world as witnesses.
St. Paul builds on this in the second reading: “You are God’s temple, and God’s Spirit dwells in you.” The Church is not just a sacred building but a sacred people, each baptized person a living brick in God’s house. So, if we truly are God’s temple, maybe our “renovation project” is not finished yet. God is still knocking down walls of our pride, repainting our hearts with mercy, and rewiring our minds with grace.
In the Gospel, Jesus cleansed the Temple. Jesus was not angry because of money itself but because the sacred space had lost its soul. It is a bit like when we clutter our hearts with noise, resentment, or distraction. Jesus walks in, turns a few tables over, and says, “Make room for the Father again.” It is a tough love that restores holiness to the temple, both to the building and to the believer.
So today, as we honor the Lateran Basilica, let us remember: every church we enter points us to the greater temple, you and me, living stones joined to Christ the cornerstone. May the river of His grace flow through our lives and refresh the world around us. And let us keep our “temples” a little tidier, after all, Jesus still does surprise inspections!

Pope Leo XIV: Prayer Intention for November
In his prayer intention for November 2025, Pope Leo XIV invites us to pray for the prevention of suicide: Let us pray that those who are tempted to commit suicide might find the support, care and love they need in their community, and be open to the beauty of life.
Church Entrance Renovation
Beginning Monday, November 10th, new terrazzo floors will be installed in the church entrance. The project is expected to take several days, and while we hope it will be completed before the following weekend, the timeline may vary.
During this time:
- The front entrance will be closed - please use the side entrance to enter and exit the church.
- Washroom access inside the church will be unavailable. However, the facilities at 15 Church St. will remain unlocked and available for use as needed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make these beautiful and necessary improvements to our church!

LifeMatters Presents: ‘Dying to Meet You, Preventing Euthanasia and Encouraging Hope’: on Sunday, November 16th, at St. John Elementary School
Volunteers needed! We need assistance for an hour after the 9am Mass November 16th, preparing the lunch for the Dying to Meet You Event and/or by providing dessert.
Confessions are available 30 minutes before each regular Daily & Weekend Mass.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Pilgrim Icon The Icon of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be on display for six days, beginning Saturday, November 8th, for a time of reflection and adoration. This initiative, led by the Knights of Columbus Ontario State Council, invites the faithful to draw closer to the merciful love of Christ through prayer before the Sacred Heart. The icon will journey through select parishes across the province, and we are blessed that our own St. John the Baptist Church has been chosen to host it, thanks to the efforts of our local Council #3536. Please take a moment to pray and adore in the presence of this beautiful and holy icon. Pilgrimage to the Canadian Martyrs' Shrine, Midland (by St. Mary’s Carleton Place) July 16 -17, 2026 Pilgrims will leave St. Mary in Carleton Place and travel by coach to Midland. There, pilgrims will participate in Holy Mass. The Stations of the Cross and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available, as well as many other opportunities for private prayer.
