WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S FLOCKNOTE
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today's Gospel begins with a scene many of us know well. The disciples are in a boat, doing exactly what Jesus told them to do, yet they find themselves battling a storm. Is that not how life feels often? You can be faithful, pray every day, love your family, and still find yourself facing unexpected waves, illness, financial worries, broken relationships, or uncertainty about the future.
Every one of us faces storms. Some are the storms of illness, grief, family tensions, or uncertainty. Others are hidden deep within the heart, fear, doubt, disappointment, or loneliness.
Today's readings remind us that while God may not always calm the storm immediately, He always comes to us in the midst of it. Elijah discovers that God is not found in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but in "the sound of sheer silence" (1 Kings 19:12).
Peter walks on water only while his eyes remain fixed on Jesus; the moment he focuses on the waves, he begins to sink (Matthew 14:30). Jesus does not scold Peter before saving him. Notice that before Jesus challenges Peter's faith, He first reaches out His hand and saves him. God’s Grace always comes before correction.
St. Paul, in today's second reading, reveals another dimension of faith: a heart that suffers for others. He carries "great sorrow and unceasing anguish" (Romans 9:2) because he longs for his people to know Christ. Authentic faith never becomes self-centered; it always desires that others encounter the Lord.
Today, the risen Lord speaks the same words to every anxious heart: "Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid" (Matthew 14:27). As we gather around this Eucharistic table, may we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Storms will come and go, but the hand that holds us is stronger than the waves. With Christ in our boat, fear never has the final word, His love does.

Healing Service: “I am the Lord, your Healer” (Exodus 15:26). Jesus is alive! We have seen Him heal illness and injuries in our day. Join us to encounter the healing love of our Risen Lord on Thursday, Aug. 20th, 6:45pm – 9:00pm at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 1111 Taylor-Kidd Blvd, Kingston. The evening will open giving praise to God and proclaiming His Word, followed by prayers for physical healing, and an opportunity for individual healing prayer. Free and open to the public. St. John's Holy Face Group:
St. John's Holy Face Group (meets on the last Thursday of the month) following the noon Mass. Our monthly gatherings will last no longer than one hour and will provide an opportunity to pray, share and learn about this powerful, Church-approved Holy Face devotion of reparation. Update: I know that there are many who have expressed interest in joining us but are (understandably) taking a wait-and-see approach to register. But if you're seriously interested in this pilgrimage, please secure your spot by completing the registration forms and returning them with a copy of your passport. Note that we will not charge any payments until we know for sure we are going (however, anyone intending to pay by credit card must complete the credit card section). But it's important to secure your spot because there's very high demand and you don't want to miss this opportunity. We're already over 50% booked, and should a stable ceasefire be negotiated and held in the next few weeks, there will be an explosion of demand.
